What Is a Step Deck Conestoga?

A step deck Conestoga trailer is a step deck flatbed with a retractable tarp-and-curtain system mounted on a rolling frame. The cover slides forward and back along the length of the deck, so freight loads from the side like an open flatbed and then seals up under cover — with no hand-tarping.
The step deck Conestoga is a very specialized piece of equipment, typically used on higher-value freight that is tall in size and difficult to tarp. It's a safer option for drivers and shippers alike — saving the driver from having to find creative ways to tarp tall loads, and saving the customer from worrying about the tarping process damaging their product.

Laufer's step deck Conestogas offer about 52 feet of usable deck length, roughly 100 to 101 inches of usable width, and a usable height around 115–118 inches under the cover, with a maximum payload of 45,500 pounds. The upper deck is about 10′ in length with a usable height of about 102″–104″; the lower deck, which is 41′ in length, offers 115″ to 118″ of usable height.
The retractable cover adds a small amount of weight compared with a regular open step deck, which is the only real trade-off for the weather protection and faster, tarp-free loading it provides.
When Is a Step Deck Conestoga the Right Choice?
A step deck Conestoga solves several problems a regular Conestoga or a regular step deck can't on their own. Conestogas eliminate hand-tarping — which can be time consuming and physically demanding. They also keep freight dry and out of the weather while removing the possibility of tarps damaging your products by marring paint or friction from flapping in the wind.
